  29. relatively small (usually <300 mm long), freshwaterdwelling
  30. teleosts that are found on several land
  31. masses in the southern hemisphere (McDowall &amp;
  32. Fulton 1996). Many galaxiid species have nondiadromous
  33. life histories and the distribution of some
  34. of these consists of discrete lacustrine populations
  35. (McDowall 2000; Allen, Midgley &amp; Allen 2002). As a
  36. result of restricted or fragmented distributions,
  37. along with other impacts (e.g. introduced fish species),
  38. many lacustrine galaxiid species are considered to
  39. be threatened; hence monitoring populations for
  40. conservation purposes is a common management
  41. practice.

  43. Fyke nets are known to be effective for capturing
  44. small-sized benthic or littoral fish in lakes (Fago 1998;
  45. Krueger &amp; Hubert 1998), including galaxiids (Rowe &amp;
  46. Chisnall 1997; Rowe, Konui &amp; Christie 2002). Fyke
  47. net catches of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in lakes
  48. vary seasonally, suggesting relative abundance indices
  49. based on catch data often require correction for
  50. differences in catchability (Ryan 1984). Seasonal
  51. fluctuations in fyke net catches of European perch,
  52. Perca fluviatilis L., due to spawning-related habitat
  53. shifts were also reported by Kubeka (1992). Other
  54. studies showed that cover-orientated fish species tend
  55. to have increased catchability by fyke nets because fyke nets provide cover (Krueger &amp; Hubert 1998;

  234. net catches of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in lakes&#13;
  235. vary seasonally, suggesting relative abundance indices&#13;
  236. based on catch data often require correction for&#13;
  237. differences in catchability (Ryan 1984). Seasonal&#13;
  238. fluctuations in fyke net catches of European perch,&#13;
  239. Perca fluviatilis L., due to spawning-related habitat&#13;
  240. shifts were also reported by Kubeka (1992). Other&#13;
  241. studies showed that cover-orientated fish species tend&#13;
  242. to have increased catchability by fyke nets because fyke nets provide cover (Krueger &amp; Hubert 1998;&#13;
